KOPAN MONASTER Situated a north of the ancient Buddhist town of the Boudhanath is the Kopan Hill which houses Kopan Monastery. It is the scenic landscape just outside Kathmandu, where the mystic monastery is run and managed by Lama Zopa Rinpoche. The place popular among foreign tourists for its meditation retreats and various other courses. Kopan is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery. It is a member of the Foundation for Preservation of the Mahayama Tradition FMPT, an international network of Gelugpa dharma centers, and once served as its headquarters.

The monastery was established by FMPT's founders, Lamas Thubten Yeshe and Thubten Zopa Rinpoche, who bought the property from Nepal's royal astrologer in 1967. Kopan has become especially famous from teaching Buddhism to visiting western foreigners.
Kopan now encompasses two separate institutions: the monastery, atop Kopan Hill, and the nearby Khachoe Ghakyil Ling Nunnery. The nunnery was eastablished in 1979 by Lama Yeshe to provide spiritual and practical education. Kopan monastery has also recently become a popular recreational destination for Kathmandu residents and tourists.
