Kathmandu: Kathmandu is known as Kantipur, the kingdom of Nepal. accumulates 78 million people of various race, cast, creed, culture and religion and is the largest city in Nepal. The term Kathmandu has been derived from the combination of two Sanskrit words 'kasth' meaning wood and 'mandap' meaning beautiful shades. Situated at the elevation of approximately 4,265 ft. There are many beautiful and interesting places to visit outside the Kathmandu Valley. The places are full of history and historical remains and are remarkable for their beauties. Kathmandu is home to gems such as Durbar Square (with temples dating back to the 12th century), Boudhanath Stupa (a world heritage site), The Pashupatinath Temple (the country's most important hindu temple, on the bank of the Bagmati River, and the Royal Palace (the site of the infamous 2001 massacre of the Royal family by the then crown prince, and now converted into the Narayanhiti Palace Museum.

Kathmandu is the capital and largest urban agglomerate of Nepal. The agglomerate consists of Kathmandu Metropolitan City at its core, and its sister cities Patan, Kirtipur, Thimi, and Bhaktapur. Population 700,000 (2008). The city is at 1336 m above sea level. The valley covers an area of 218 square miles. It is surrounded by a tier of green mountain wall above, which tower mighty snow-capped peaks. It is the political as well as cultural capital of the country.  The Kathmandu Valley hosts seven World Heritage Sites declared by the UNESCO in Nepal. The valley is famous for scenery, beautiful countryside, ethnic clans, monasteries and thousands of temples. The city is also called the city of temple.

Kathmandu is also the gateway to the rest of Nepal in particular the tranquil Bhaktapur, temple-tastic Patan, the Chitwan National Park and of course, the Himalaya.

Kathmandu Valley comprises the three ancient cities of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur. Situated at an altitude of 1336 meter above the sea level, the Kathmandu Valley covers an area of 218 sq. miles. These three independent states ruled by the Malla King from the 12th to the 18th centuries. These three cities house seven UNESCO World Heritage Shrines which are together listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Sites (Culture). The valley is also home to hundreds of other exquisite monuments, sculptures, artistic temples and magnificent reminders of the golden era in Nepal's architecture.
